OUR FIRST PROPERTY FOR THE CONTEST IS TWIN SISTERS, SUISUN VALLEY, CA. ANTICIPATED HARVEST DATE: TUES. NOV 7.
This is the first year that we are in contract with this property. We have limited information as the only data known is from last year. Here is everything I know:
1. Total number of trees- 2000 over 10 acres (200/ acre)
2. Number of each varietal- Frantoio 1400, Leccino 200, Maurino 200, and Pendolino 200
3. Age of trees – 8 years
4. Total tons harvested last year- 20
5. AVg yield per ton last year- 38 gallons
Olive trees are alternate year bearing…one year you have a big harvest, the next is smaller. But remember, not all trees are always planted in the same year. Sometimes we have access to that information, sometimes we don’t. The majority of these trees were planted in the same year.
Last year California had an abnormally low harvest. The consensus was that it was due to high temps in Spring that burnt the olive blossoms. We did not have the high temps this year…..so…….
The later the olives are harvested, the more the olives will yield in oil. So, a riper olive is going to yield more oil. Ripeness is indicated by the skin turning purple/black as well as the flesh.
Because it is such a large crop, we are lowering our risk by bringing in the olives early. This will lessen the yield….my guess….significantly. We don’t stress too much about the yield being lower because what we lose in yield, we gain in character.
The Twin Sisters Property trees have a much heavier crop this year. Best guess….trees have 25% more crop….but hey that’s just my guess…no way to measure.
Watch for other tweets, facebooks and posts on this property as we harvest.
